Whiteland selected for industrial development program

Duke Energy announced on May 21st that Whiteland is one of four Indiana communities selected to participate in the 2014 Site Readiness Program. This program will evaluate and make recommendations to improve an approximately 150-acre site near the I-65 interchange to help Whiteland to compete for new companies and jobs.

The Town of Whiteland and the Johnson County Development Corporation applied for this program with the desire to heighten the profile of the Town for industrial and commercial development. As part of the process, Duke will bring McCallum Sweeney Consulting, a nationally-ranked site selection consultant, to town to analyze the site, area, infrastructure, and other aspects that help to draw businesses to Whiteland. Banning Engineering of Plainfield will also work with the Town and McCallum Sweeney to develop conceptual master plans for the future development of the area.

Dennis Capozzi, Town Manager, commented, “The site readiness program will greatly benefit the Town of Whiteland’s residents and businesses by increasing the desirability of the Town and attracting new and growing companies. We are pleased to have been selected to participate.”

The site selected for analysis is primarily comprised of the former Maschmeyer Nursery property, now owned by Salin Bank, located across from Warrior Trail (formerly CR 300E) near I-65. In conjunction with an adjacent agricultural parcel, there are 150 acres included in the program.

“The Town is excited to be a part of Duke Energy’s site readiness program,” said Nathan Bilger, Director of Planning and Zoning. “We expect that the program’s recommendations will help to establish Whiteland as a community poised to prosper in the post-recession economy.”

The program will take approximately four months to complete, culminating in a presentation to Town officials, utility representatives, and others in mid-September.
