For the month of April, the Whiteland Town Hall and Wastewater Treatment Plant will be lighted in blue in recognition of “Light It Up Blue” for Autism Awareness Month.

We are joining iconic landmarks, hotels, sporting venues, concert halls, museums, universities, bridges, retail stores, and thousands of homes worldwide that will light blue beginning on April 2 in honor of people with autism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disability; signs typically appear during early childhood and affect a person’s ability to communicate, and interact with others. Autism affects about 1 in 70 children today, making this an increasingly common disorder.

The Town considers this an important issue to promote, as our public safety officers often encounter persons with autism, either in response to a call or unexpectedly while on patrol. Recognizing the behavior symptoms and knowing contact approaches can minimize situations of risk: risk or victimization of the person with autism, and risk to the officer.

Since autism is becoming more common than ever, it is important for the public to know and understand these behaviors as well. Throughout the month, we will be working to promoting awareness and education of this disorder, including this blue lighting effort, awareness ribbons, and education sessions.
